Q & A with Jonathan Montessori School

Q & A with Jonathan Montessori School

In 1971, Jonathan Montessori School (JMS) was located in the original homestead of the Jonathan Area known as the Worm Barn. The Worm Barn was named after the second family to live on the homestead, the Worm Family. In May of 1989, a disastrous fire destroyed the school and the barn. Jonathan Montessori's committed parents and staff rallied together, creating a plan to begin again on Hundertmark Road. Today you can find them on the corner of Bavaria & Hundertmark, the previous home of St. Andrew West.  The building was purchased from St. Andrew in 2012 with an addition built in 2013. The school participates in the Association’s Annual Garage Sale Festival and Fourth of July Festival.girl.jpeg

Q:      Are you a preschool or a daycare?

A:   We are a private, not-for-profit school. Our children attend for half, full or extended day programs and are provided engaging hands-on learning experiences using an authentic Montessori Educational Philosophy. We also offer free play-dates.

Q:      What ages are the children?

A:      The Toddler Community consists of children 16 – 32 months.
The Primary Classrooms (preschool and Kindergarten combined) include children 33 months through Kindergarten.

Q:      Is Jonathan Montessori religious?

A:     The Montessori Philosophy educates children without religious association. Some Montessori schools may be affiliated with a religion, but Jonathan Montessori is secular and prides itself on environments that are extremely diverse and embraces families of all cultures and religions.

Q:      Are you open all year round?

A:    Our school year follows the District 112 calendar and we also offer a summer program to our current students to accommodate working parents’ schedules and to provide a summer camp experience.

Q:      What else should people in the community know about JMS?

A:      We love our property & being a part of Jonathan! This summer we look forward to working hard on our gardens and plan to further develop our all-natural play area.

If you’re curious and want to learn more about JMS, you can stop by on Thursdays from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. and peek through one-way windows to observe the children while school is in session. We love visitors!
