2016 GUTHRIE SUMMER CAMPS

(Minneapolis/St. Paul) The Guthrie offers a perfect summer camp opportunity to inspire young people through theater games, creative movement and engaging fun. With uniquely gifted instructors and a wide range of offerings, Summer Camps at the Guthrie are an ideal way to spend a week igniting passion for theater in young people grades 3-12. Weeklong camps begin June 13 and continue through July 29. All levels are welcome. Summer Camps at the Guthrie offer a wide range of performing opportunities for children and teens, including acting, musical theater, Shakespeare and comedy. Back by popular demand is the Totally Technical camp, where teens can learn the tricks of the trade in the world behind the stage. 
 
The Guthrie will also be participating again in the Arts on the River Day Camp, June 27-30 from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Campers (ages 9-11) will play music, create stories, build books and bake bread while exploring the Riverfront District. Arts on the River Camp offers children a new experience each day to build creativity at four leading arts centers, including the Guthrie, Mill City Museum, Minnesota Center for Book Arts and MacPhail Center for Music. Registration is available through the Minnesota Historical Society.
 
Guthrie camps are taught by an impressive roster of teaching artists led by Mark Rosenwinkel. Rosenwinkel’s professional acting career spans nearly three decades and includes work at most major Twin Cities theaters, including the Guthrie. Other teaching artists include performers with local and national credentials in areas including character acting, vocal performance, sketch and standup comedy, stage combat, choreography, European-style clowning, dialects and more. Guthrie 2016 summer camp teaching artists are Betsy Benjamin, Shanan Custer, Laura Esping, Jon Ferguson, Michelle O'Neill, Aaron Preusse, Jan Puffer,Mark Rosenwinkel, Eric Webster, Adia Morris and Jim Gangl.

IT'S SHOWTIME
NEW HALF-DAY CAMP! 
June 13-17, 2016
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. • $250
 
Unleash your child into the wondrous world of theater and watch as their imagination runs wild! Through music, movement, storytelling and mask-making, your child will sample a variety of building blocks that are essential in creating live theater. Loaded with discovery and teamwork, this fun-filled week promises to inspire, delight and entertain – building a foundation for a lifetime of creativity.
 

CAMPS FOR GRADES 6 - 8

MUSICAL THEATER JOURNEYS
June 27 - July 1, 2016
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. • $495
 
Campers will learn the basics of what it takes to create a musical in just one week. Guthrie teaching artists will direct, choreograph and make campers’ imaginative ideas come to life! 

MAKE 'EM LAUGH
Session A: July 11-15, 2016  
Session B: July 18-22, 2016  
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. • $495
Campers will experience the joy of improvisation, including unique exercises in creating quirky characters and scenes, as well as the fine art of slapstick, double takes, spit takes and split-second joke timing. 
 
ACT IT OUT
July 25-29, 2016

Led by experienced actors, young performers will discover acting techniques, character development and professional tricks of the trade. Using portions of popular tales, plays and books as inspiration, campers will collaborate to create their own unique stories.

EXTREME SLAPSTICK
June 13-17, 2016

Explore character development and theater techniques for a wide variety of physical comedy, including sight gags, mask work, clowning, stage combat and much more. 
 
BROADWAY BOUND
Session A: July 11-15, 2016  
Session B: July 25-29, 2016

Immerse yourself in all aspects of musical theater with training in singing, dance and acting, while acquiring the confidence and bold techniques required for larger-than-life productions. Campers will create their own musical theater piece. 
 
SHAKESPEARE INTENSIVE
July 18-22, 2016
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. • $495
Dive into the work of William Shakespeare with rigorous training in acting, voice and movement from seasoned professionals. Activities will include various methods for understanding and speaking the words of our greatest playwright. 
 
TOTALLY TECHNICAL
July 25-29, 2016
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. • $495
Through hands-on instruction, explore technical areas of our world-class professional theater. Guthrie artists and staff will demonstrate how the pieces of the puzzle come together – from hearing a designer’s vision to seeing it realized for the stage. Campers will gain an in-depth understanding of the Guthrie’s amazing backstage inner-workings.
 
 

THE GUTHRIE THEATER (Joseph Haj, Artistic Director) was founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie in 1963 and is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training, dedicated to producing the great works of dramatic literature and to cultivating the next generation of theater artists. Under the leadership of Haj, the Guthrie produces a mix of classic and contemporary plays on three stages, and continues to set a national standard for excellence in theatrical production and performance.
