Summer is here! Well it felt like it for a few days :) I am in the process of adding all the great summer programs the local libraries offer and other fun kid carnivals I keep hearing about. Please let me know if I miss anything and check the calendar often.

Princess stories will be the order of the day as Belle of Beauty and the Beast entertains children young and old at storytimes. Storytelling as Belle, Jillian Leone will read, do some activities and generally captivate her audience. Jillian Leone is a stay-at-home mom who is busy with her very own little princess, Ava. She has an extensive history with acting and spent years as a competitive dancer. She has always loved kids and has a special spot in her heart for Disney princesses. She currently owns her own children's entertainment company and could not be more excited to share her love of reading with the Carver County Libraries this summer, May-August.

Friday, May 17 - Como Zoo Field Trip

We’re going to the zoo...how about you? Bears, giraffes, tigers and monkeys are just some of the animals to see at the Como Zoo in St. Paul. Also, the Conservatory is a beautiful sight to see with spring flowers in bloom. Bring a lunch for you and your child or money to purchase lunch there.

Our year is coming to an end, and we’ve decided to celebrate with a party! Come join our ECFE families, as we welcome spring with some outdoor activities. We’ll bring the parachute, balance beam, and bean bag toss game. Little ones might also like to try Frisbee, catch, or golf. Just for fun, we’ll have a Scavenger Hunt and Obstacle Course. Please bring a bag lunch to refuel after all that activity. At the end we’ll have a yummy surprise. Let’s Party!

Monday, May 20 - Preschool Play and Learn

 Children of all ages and those who care for them are invited to attend a play session. The focus is on child and caregiver interaction and developing skills that every child needs through the use of materials for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. A goal is to identify and support FFN caregivers and provide them with additional resources and monetary incentives through the CAP Agency – Child Care Resource and Referral. Bring the entire family to the Carver County Fairgrounds to get an up-close look at the vehicles you see at work in our community. Imagine a fire engine, school bus, ambulance, street sweeper, sheriff car and limousine all in one place. You will be able to explore each of these vehicles and learn what they are used for. If you are “wild about wheels,” you won’t want to miss this event. In case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled.

Learn what creatures, big and small, make their home in a pond. Make your own pond creature catcher and get a

Saturday, May 25 - StoryWalk with a campfire

Enjoy StoryWalks with your family this summer in Carver County as you visit local parks in Carver County. Pages from the book featured at each StoryWalk will be located along the path and lead you to the end of the walking path as it leads you on to the end of the story. StoryWalk is to encourage children to read in the parks during the summer as part of the National Park System's "No Child Left Inside" initiative. It is a great way for kids to read and be physically active at the same time. Funded by Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund Note: Storywalks will be cancelled in case of inclement weather.

Basil Shrimp Pasta


Macaroni Menu

Serves 6   Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
8 oz box of your favorite pasta… I used thin spaghetti. Angel hair would be great too!
1-1/2 cups of cherry tomatoes, halved
3 teaspoons olive oil
1-1/2 lb fresh medium shrimp, peeled, dev-eined and tails removed
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
1/4 teaspoon of Kosher salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons chopped basil
 
1. Cook pasta as directed ...

I saw this awesome idea on Pinterest and it inspired me to try my own take on it! My kids love it and it was so easy and fun to make! 

Supplies:  
Hair gel (cheap stuff from the a dollar store)
Glitter
Duct tape
Cardboard
Clear plastic bag


Step 1: Measure approximately 5-6 ounces of hair gel and mix in as much glitter as you want!


Step 2: Pour mixture into a clear food storage bag and get as much air out as possible and seal bag.

Take A Colorful Nature Walk


Macaroni Fun

Make your next walk a hunt for specific colors (try this any time of the year). This is an easy project that can be made very simple as your time/ materials/ patience demands.

You’ll need:
  • An empty egg carton
  • Paints and paintbrushes
Paint the inside of an egg carton different colors. Encourage the children to mix colors together or add black or white to create different hues.
